Car Sharing
Peterborough City Council is working with Park-Farm.com to promote car sharing in and around Peterborough. Every day there are over 10 million empty seats on the UKs roads. By registering your journeys and searching for someone else travelling the same journey at the same time, you can significantly reduce the traffic on Peterborough’s roads, save money and have a more sociable trip. The scheme is open to people travelling between home and work or for leisure-related journeys and is completely free to use.
Car sharing can
· Reduce fuel costs and parking charges by sharing day-to-day expenses
· Reduce congestion and save valuable time at the beginning and end of the day
· Enhance the re-sale value of cars by reducing the mileage and wear and tear
· Give users a more sociable and less stressful way of travelling
· Reduce traffic pollution and minimise impact on local communities and the environment
People who want to investigate opportunities for car sharing – should visit www.travelchoice.org.uk click on the blue ‘share it’ logo, register their journey details and search for a match. Users can view the matches, make contact through the system and arrange to car share.
The site includes advice about personal safety, etiquette and charging. Contact details are kept secure at all times, with arrangements being made via e-mail. By registering, users are not obliged to participate in a car share, either as drivers or passengers, and they are not required to make a commitment to share every day. People who do not own a car can also join the scheme.
Car sharing schemes have already been adopted in other parts of the country under the auspices of Liftshare, a national car sharing organisation. As a result, users of the Peterborough scheme can extend their search to more than two million registered journeys throughout the UK. The scheme has also recently been extended to allow people to search for a walking, cycling or taxi buddy. More information about each is given below.
Walking and Cycling Buddy
The idea is not just to help those people who currently walk or cycle to find buddies but also to encourage individuals who may be concerned about walking or cycling to give it a go - both as a way to get to work and as a leisure activity. By putting walkers and cyclists in touch with each other we hope to reduce some of the usual reasons for not choosing these forms of travel.
Active forms of travel mean you can fit a workout into your busy day, feel energized when you arrive at work, avoid parking hassles & costs, help improve air quality, have fun and meet like minded people.
Taxi Buddy
You can now also search for someone making the same journey by taxi. This will enable people to have the convenience of taking a taxi whilst significantly reducing the cost.
